Parish Life

At Church of the Nativity, it is easy to find opportunities to be involved, whether you are interested in deepening your faith, serving the community, participating in fellowship, or serving the church and congregation.

Deepening our Faith

  • Christian Education with offerings for adults and youth.
  • Faith and Science Dialog: an exploration of the intersection of faith and science.
  • Spirituality in the Arts: a series of performances and exhibitions on weekend afternoons by professional and amateur musicians, artists, and actors, of works that relate to our faith.
  • Daughters of the King: An Episcopal lay order for women who commit themselves to a rule of life including daily prayer and service.
  • Inquirers Classes: Preparation for Confirmation in the Episcopal Church. Classes offered for both teenagers and adults. A bishop visits Nativity at least once a year to confirm and to receive adults from other Christian traditions.
  • Prayer Chain: Volunteers who pray daily for special needs. To add someone to their prayer list, click here.
  • Centering Prayer: weekly exercise of contemplative prayer.
  • Vacation Bible School: one week during the summer.
  • Following the lead of our Bishop, we make frequent use of Gospel Based Discipleship, an approach to encountering the Gospel that originated in Native American communities of the Episcopal Church.
  • The Diocese of North Carolina operates a School of Ministry, Cursillo, and other programs.

Fun and Fellowship

  • Youth: We have youth fellowship events in conjunction with Rite 13 and J2A at various times, usually on Sunday evenings September-May. The Diocese of North Carolina also operates a youth program.
  • Fellowship: Most Sundays, meet after the 10:30 service for coffee and juice in Corlett Hall or outdoors in nice weather.
  • Foyer: Social groups for dinners with other members of the congregation.
  • MON: Men of Nativity. Service, fellowship, education, outings, and food.
  • Parish Events: Evening events centering on a festival of the church year, usually including a meal and an activity or service.
  • Senior Outings.

Serving the Church and Congregation

  • Acolytes: Serve at Sunday and special services.
  • Altar Guild: Prepare altar for all services.
  • Choirs: Adult Choir, Children's Choir, Adult Hand Bell Choir, Youth Hand Bell Choirs.
  • Emergency Meals: Provide meals for emergencies.
  • Eucharistic Ministers: Assist in the distribution of Holy Communion at worship services.
  • Eucharistic Visitors: Bring the Blessed Sacrament to shut-ins.
  • Facilities: Building maintenance.
  • Flowers: Provide or arrange flowers for altar.
  • Greeters: Welcome people at each service.
  • Landscaping and Grounds: Mow the grass, maintain the grounds.
  • Lectors: Read the lessons at services.
  • Nativity Stitchers: Create needlepoint cushions for the chancel.
  • Receptions and Dinners: Help in organizing, cooking, decorating,and cleaning up.
  • Ushers: Distribute worship materials, assist persons in seating and in receiving Holy Communion, and collect offerings.
  • Vestry: Jointly govern our parish with our rector. Vestry members recruit other parishioners to serve on committees such as Finance and Stewardship.
